With people able to get their news anytime, anywhere, how important is it for you to focus on delivering local news? DAWSON: the technology, though, will drive a lot of that, I mean, you know. You are consuming a media in the right way. The year began with bushfires destroying the lives, and livelihoods, of tens of thousands of people. You know, the fabric of the community is directly affected and improved by the amount of local news there is, you know. Rural hospitals increase local access and allow patients to focus on "getting better" rather than "getting to appointments." Personalized Care Through connectivity and collaboration rural hospitals are large enough to serve our community's health needs, but we are also small enough to care. It seems like in the need to get news out as quickly as possible one of the things that sometimes get sacrificed in that speed is accuracy. Back then, The Bridge was one of just two newspapers in Australia still using the centuries-old method of hot lead printing. Is this a fact or is this an opinion? So, you know, you see these companies sort of restaffing themselves, re-engineering how they approach things, rewiring their culture to be leaner, more creative, more public facing, more engaged. Tom Karlo from KPBS, how do they get in touch with you? That is why the online version of a rural community newspaper is also crucial to the success of the publication. BARRY: It was how do you get a point across to the news media when local government has failed in their duty? There is impetus for us to reaffirm the importance of rural community to our interconnected society. I mean, thats the concept. Every Thursday for almost 20 years, Albert Lyon (right) would buy The Bridge and read it to his good friend, Lenny Logan, beneath the shade of a wattle tree.

Sadly, Albert and Lenny have passed into memory, as many country newspapers had around Australia even before this pandemic hit. NELSON: Grant Barrett, engagement editor for the Voice of San Diego and a familiar voice to San Diegans as co-host of Public Radios A Way with Words. Joining me to talk about how these changes are affecting local media organizations and the news theyre providing to the public are Jeff Light, editor of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The news they deliver might be pretty much the same as before, but the model under which they operate is not. All too often, that news is little more than rumor, sometimes made up out of whole cloth and at best some grain of truth exaggerated in its retellings vastly, and often alarmingly out of proportion. We'll look at the changing relationship between the media and public and how local news organizations will survive in the future. The rural public library is gaining enormous importance in rural communities. It could be weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Tom Karlo, you want to talk about the dumbing down of our society if, in fact, thats the case? The story starts out vague, it becomes specific. But, I mean, I do. NELSON: Thank you. The newspaper is part of the community or is perceived so by people in that community. The Union-Tribune has gone through some pretty major changes over the past decade. There are two main reasons for the resilience of small-town newspapers. Thank you for being there. And I think what its forced all of us to do is refocus and reprioritize what we do. In a small town, every newspaper reader thinks he or she is a stockholder, because there exists a real relationship, an implied contract, if you will, between that paper and its readers. I think the demise of print journalism, and I see it as that, we are subscribers to the U-T and weve noticed the difference in the size of the papers. KARLO: Well, you know, for us, I dont have to worry about, KARLO: Yeah. DAWSON: And then the economy hit at the same time. Make sure attribution is there and so that its clear. So thats our work. NELSON: Lets stop here. And, you know what, I just want to reiterate that to our staff all the time that we have to do this, and this is one of the checks and balances.
